Aromatherapy Massage Oils

Sanji Gretta

If you’ve never used aromatherapy massage oils, you owe it to
yourself to try it. You’re in for a totally unique experience.
Whether you want a massage to relax or to rejuvenate or even to
heal, using aromatherapy massage oils brings the body’s senses
to new heights.

Aromatherapy has made steady gains in use and for good reason.
Offering the perfect combination of mental and physical well
being, there is no better way to take advantage of aromatherapy
than to enjoy its fragrances in massage oils.

Our body’s different senses have been shown to have a direct
affect on how we feel. For example, the nose is a very
sensitive part of your body. Without it, you cannot taste or
smell. Imagine your favorite foods. Now, imagine you cannot
taste them. That is scary, everything you eat with no taste!
How do you think that would affect your attitude throughout the
day?

Studies have shown that the part of your nervous system that
helps to control your emotions is connected directly to your
nose. Lack of smell can cause symptoms ranging from depression
to anxiety and this is only one of your senses. With the
knowledge of how the mind depends on the feedback from your
senses, the idea of aromatherapy exploded onto the scene.

One of the more popular types of aromatherapy is massage oil,
because of the variety of uses to target specific issues.
Aromatherapy massage oil treatments are unlike any other oils.
Whether you are in need of relaxation or need something to perk
you up, there is an aroma to fit the immediate needs.
Aromatherapy massage combines two excellent methods to evoke
your body’s response in whatever area you feel is needed.

There are so many different types and manufacturers of
aromatherapy massage oils available, it would be a good idea to
do your homework before using. For the best treatment ideas, it
is always best to find and pay a certified therapist to ensure
you understand how to get the most impact from aromatherapy
massage. Especially, when using for the first time.

To explain a couple of different oils and fragrances we will
start with Lavender essential oils. Lavender essential oils are
one of the few oils that you can apply directly to your skin. It
is said to have burn relief power. It is important to note that
these oils should not hurt you, however, if this is your first
time using essential oils never use them directly on your skin
unless under safe direction. Other oils are required to be
diluted before use with other base oils.

Another oil gaining in popularity is the Yland Ylang essential
oil. Yland Ylang essential oils have very unique properties as
well. It is said that these tropical plants have the power to
both arouse and sooth the senses. It also goes by another name
Cananga Odorata.

Adding aromatherapy massage oils to your therapy program is one
experience everyone should try at least once. (Be careful they
have been known to be addictive). With the combination of
massage and a scented room to awaken your senses, you have the
ultimate in relaxation and healing.

Honey: A Notable Facial Skin Care Product

By: Kay Zetkin

Did you know that even many centuries ago, honey was a noted facial skin care product that's an important part of the skin care treatment and even hair care of legendary beauties? Cleopatra was known to bathe herself in milk and honey. Poppea, the wife of Nero, used honey and milk as facial lotion. It helped to keep her looking youthful.

During the 1800s, when mass production of skin care products, hair treatment products and other cosmetics were already being done, honey was a noted ingredient. It is a natural formulation which answers to consumer's demand for more natural skin care product agents.

Aside from being a natural beauty formulation, this nature's offering turned out to be an antimicrobial agent! All-natural honey turned out to be an effective treatment for minor abrasions and burns.

Also, honey is a natural fit as a moisturizer. No wonder, it is a major ingredient in a variety of moisturizing products nowadays, like cleansers, creams, shampoos and conditioners. Honey is a humectant which attracts and retains water - a major factor to assist the body and facial skin's ability to stay hydrated.

Those with sensitive skin and are worrying over the right skin care products for their babies, honey can help because of it's anti-irritant properties. Preliminary studies also revealed that honey has significant natural antioxidant properties.

Antioxidants play a role in protecting the skin from the damage of UV rays and in aiding in skin rejuvenation. Honey is a very ideal ingredient in skin care products that ward off the UV ray's damaging effect. If you are afraid that using of sun block creams and sunscreens dries your skin, you must look for honey as an ingredient in these products.

That's not all. . Presently, a research is underway which will develop a process to use honey in creating alpha hydroxy acids. AHAs or Alpha hydroxyl acids are an important ingredient since it helps in exfoliating the skin or renewal of skin cells. Skin gives off a younger and vibrant glow whenever there is an increased exfoliation of the skin

You can use all-natural honey in lots of ways! For a fragrant and silky bathing experience, add ¼ cup of honey to your bath water. To achieve shiny hair, you should stir 1 teaspoon of honey into 4 cups of warm water. if you are a blonde, adding a squeeze of lemon is a good move, too. Your mixture should be poured through your hair after shampooing. Do not rinse it out and dry out your hair through normal means.

You can also have a moisture mask by mixing 2 tablespoons of honey with 2 teaspoons of milk. Smooth the mixture over your face and throat and leave it on for about 10 mins. Then rinse off with warm water. By mixing 1 teaspoon of honey with 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil and ¼ teaspoon lemon, you already have a smoothing skin lotion to apply on dry parts of your skin.

There's many more! You can also have a honey cleansing scrub by mixing 1 tablespoon honey with 2 tablespoons of finely ground almonds and ½ teaspoon lemon juice. Always remember to rinse off with warm water. -30-

Skin Care Anti-Aging Guide

By: LORRAINE WESTON

Why is it that the skin of a newborn baby can conjure up feelings of envy in many of us? Simply because, as we age, our skin loses that satiny-smooth feeling it once had.

Our environment, our age, what we eat, and the amount of sleep we get all play a part in the look and feel of our skin.

Because most of us have, at some point in our lives, not followed all the rules when it comes to proper skin care, we may feel that it is too late to do anything about it now. Thankfully, there is hope! Let’s look at a few tools that can help slow the aging process and give our skin a youthful glow:

1. What you are is what you eat: Remember that old saying? It is true that by consuming fruits and vegetables, especially brightly colored fruit and leafy greens, we are giving our bodies vitamins and antioxidants that combat the breakdown of collagen and elastin in our skin. Also important is to make sure to drink water every day. Studies tell us different amounts to drink, from 2 glasses to 8, but they all agree on one thing: drinking water is good for you!

2. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize: Think of all the hot showers and baths you have taken; sure, they clean your skin, but they also dry it out. Our skin gets drier as part of the aging process, too. So, the best thing to combat dryness, of course, is to get some moisturizer and apply it! Your local drug store or beauty spa sells a great variety of moisturizers, and one of them will be just the right one for your skin. Ask the beauty advisor or pharmacist for assistance if you’re not sure which one to buy.

3. Sun exposure = sun damage: You can enjoy the warmth of the sun without damaging your skin simply by wearing sunscreen. An SPF rating of 15 or higher is recommended, and it’s important to reapply if you are outside for long periods of time, or have been swimming or exercising. The UVA and UVB rays that come from the sun contribute to wrinkles, dryness, and of course sunburn. There is also the risk of skin cancer. So, take a couple of minutes to slather on some sunscreen, and have fun in the outdoors while taking care of your skin!

4. The AHA Factor: AHA, or Alpha Hydroxy Acid, is a chemical commonly found in moisturizers and other skin care products. If your skin is looking dull, AHA works to get rid of old skin cells and get your skin looking soft and healthy.

5. Get your beauty sleep: Take time to get some sleep — at least 7 to 8 hours per night. While we sleep, our bodies recharge and prepare for a new day. Our skin recharges too. So, no matter how busy your day is, keep an eye on that clock, and before it gets late, take a few moments to relax and unwind. This will help you get the restful sleep you, and your skin, need.

Beautiful hair is an asset for any woman. Some are gifted with naturally beautiful hair while others have to really work hard on it. But essentially everybody has to work on hair either for improving or for maintaining it.

Sure, your appearance will be good if you can make your “crowning glory” look good, shiny and healthy. That’s why you need to do your hair care diligently. Don’t wait until you have damaged hair to make your move.

Tips For Your Hair Care

To help take care of your hair, here are a few hair care tips which might help you:

- Understand your hair type. Understanding your type of hair – such as oily, dry, natural, curly, straight, kinky or whatever – you can correctly treat your hair with products that are useful to your type of hair..

- Pick a shampoo that gives benefit to your type of hair. Apply shampoo from root to tip; gently work down the hair. Don’t pile up hair while lathering! Rinse thoroughly under running water.

- Choose conditioner that works with your shampoo. Always condition after shampooing. Apply conditioner from tip to root. Comb your hair while conditioning, through hair to ensure distribution and penetration. Use as much conditioner as your hair can absorb.

- Dry your hair gently. Do not rub your hair especially if it is very long. Take time to dry it slowly with a gently-patting or wringing action. Don’t over-dry your hair.

Start To Care For Your Hair

Okay, those tips surely will give you awareness on how to treat your hair basically.

Following are tips for those who feel that looking after your hair is important to its health. Healthy hair looks better and holds the style you want. These tips include the following:

- When you put your hair in a braid or ponytail, don’t use a plain rubber band, always use a specially-treated band like a bungee or similar item. This will prevent hair breakage and hair loss.

- Don’t sleep with your ponytail or in a tight braid. You will break your hair, and it can turn into hair loss.

- If you plan on trying out a new hairstyle such as a braid, updo or twist for a special event then practice the new braiding style several times before the big event arrives. This will guarantee great results.

Another tip is finding the right source for your hair care products. Although hair care products are available almost everywhere, the best place to find your hair care products is on the internet. It is so convenient shopping online since you can check products, compare each product, order so easily, and you can return after purchase if you feel no confidence in the products. Easy, isn’t it? Dry Hair And Split Ends

Sharon Hopkins

Using any amount of hot air will cause your hair to dry out.
Dry weather and blow drying will strip the hair of its
moisture. Shampooing frequently and swimming in chlorinated
pools will lead to dry hair and split ends. Hair dyes, electric
curlers and permanents cause hair to dry out and have split
ends.

To avoid split ends, follow the following tips and keep your
hair glossy:

• Use mayonnaise: Use a dollop of mayonnaise on the palm of the
hand and massage it to the head and leave it on for five minutes
before having the bath. The recommended time for the mayonnaise
treatment is an hour.

• Spray the beer: If you do not get any respite from using the
mayonnaise, you can use beer as a good setting lotion that
gives your hair the crisp, healthy and shiny look. You can pour
some beer into an empty pump bottle and spray on the hair after
shampooing and towel dry. Then you can style or blow-dry the
hair.

• Shampoo minimally: Though it has become fashionable to
shampoo daily, it is not advisable to do so. Shampoo strips the
hair of its natural oils and thus gives it a dry, limp
appearance. Alternatively, choose a shampoo for dry, damaged
hair.

• Condition your hair: Dry hair can be benefited greatly by the
use of conditioners after shampooing. The outer layers of the
hair or cuticles peel away the shaft, resulting in split ends.
Conditioner glues these cuticles back to the shaft and
lubricates them. It also prevents static electricity, thus
preventing its frizzy appearance.

• Avoid heat: Heat appliances like blow-dryers, electric irons
and curlers damage the hair. Instead of blow-drying the hair,
you can pat dry with a towel. Replace electric curlers with
unheated plastic rollers that were used in a bygone era.
Straighten the hair by wrapping the slightly damp hair around
the cold rollers and leave them on for about ten minutes. To
curl the hair or to give them a wavy appearance, use sponge
rollers overnight or sleep with moist braids.

• Cover your head: Wearing a hat during windy days is the
safest way to protect the hair from drying out. This way, you
will also protect your hair from drying out by the sun.

• Cut off the split ends: Every six weeks or so, try cutting
off the split ends to keep them under control.

Choosing The Right Shampoo For Your Hair Type

Tim Henry

There are hundreds of shampoo's out there, from the Suave you
can purchase at the local pharmacy to designer shampoo's like
Kerastas and Philip B. that can only be purchased from
specialty salons and stores. How do you choose?

First, know your hair type. It's fairly easy to know what type
of shampoo your hair needs if it's permed or colored. If your
hair is permed then most likely you're seeing a stylist on a
regular basis and he or she has suggested a product for you. If
your hair is colored you will want a shampoo that will be gentle
on the color and not strip it from your hair. Is your hair dry?
Oily? Thin or full and coarse?

What affect do you want the shampoo to have on your hair? Be
aware of claims made by shampoo manufacturers. The only thing
regulated by the Food & Drug Administration is the list of
ingredients on the back of the shampoo bottle. This means that
manufacturers can claim their shampoos moisturize or add volume
whether or not they do.

Herbs and botanicals smell great, but their affect on the hair
has never been proven. Actually most shampoos and conditioners
affect your hair only temporarily by leaving product behind on
your hair after you wash. They have no long term effect on the
condition of your hair at all.

Don't believe that you have to use one manufacturers entire
hair product line. It's the same for skin care products. All
shampoos clean the hair. All soaps clean the face. All
conditioners leave a trace of product on your hair which help
keep the cuticle smooth. All moisturizes soften and moisturize
the skin. It doesn't matter if you mix and match products,
despite what they say.

7 Beauty Tips for Looking Younger

© Copyright 2005 Jill Miller

Ever since Eve took that first bite of the
apple, the human race has been obsessed with
beauty.

The truth is we begin the aging process just as
soon as we pop out of the womb. Every day of
our lives our bodies slough off and regenerate
new cells. The speed at which that process
takes place when we are children is vastly
different as we get older.

Every day you are bombarded daily with
commercial messages and beauty tips that
attempt to lure you into believing that the
most recent miracle drug is just what you need
to fight off the ravages of Mother Nature.

We are living longer as a whole. Singularly,
that can be a curse or a blessing, depending on
your perspective.

The best route to natural beauty and healthy
skin is to take care of what you have. Sounds
simple, doesn¡¯t it? The truth is that your skin
takes a beating from the environment every
single day. Here are some of our favorite
beauty tips for keeping your skin fresh and
healthy:

1: Stay hydrated and do it with plenty of
water! That does not mean soda, caffeine or any
other type of liquid, even if it is low cal.

Soda (even diet soda) has a high concentration
of sodium. Sodium retains fluids. You need
fluid that will hydrate and flush your body
free of toxins. Make sure you are drinking at
least 8 glasses a day!

2: Protect your skin from harmful ultra violet
(UV) rays. We all love the sun. We love being
in it and we love having a beautiful tan. The
truth is you can poison yourself with too much
sunshine. UV rays cause skin cancer and if that
isn¡¯t bad enough it causes your skin to age
faster than it should, contributing to unsightly
wrinkles. If you must play in the sun, make
certain you are using an adequate sun screen.
Don¡¯t leave home without it!

3: Keep your skin clean. Use a soft warm cloth.
Skin does not require scrubbing. You will do
more harm than good if you do.

4: The best cure for wrinkles is to never have
them in the first place! If you are like most
of us, you didn¡¯t listen to your Mom when she
tried to tell you to stay in the shade, stand
up straight and stop squinting!

5: Eat healthy. Knowing how and what to eat,
can make a huge difference in how you feel.
Improper eating habits can cause depression,
weight gain, illness and an overall lethargy.

Weight gain causes your skin to stretch. As you
get older, it loses it's elasticity and you're
left with sagging skin.

The best solution to this is to maintain a
proper weight.

A rule of thumb for eating habits are...don't
eat more calories than you consume. Don't go
one single day without doing something extra
and physical for at least 30 minutes per day.
This can be three ten minute walks. Or 30
minutes of vigorous aerobics, or 12 minutes of
weight lifting and 18 minutes of walking.

6: Don't worry, be happy. A happy outlook
appears to trigger the release of endorphins.
Endorphins relax the cardiovascular system and
cytokines which alert the immune system to pay
attention in detecting abnormalities like
cancer cells. Listen carefully to yourself. If
you have put yourself down since childhood,
over a lifetime, negative subliminal messages
can take their toll by turning you into a
pessimist. Spend one week writing down the
phrases you use in your ¡°self talk.¡±

Chances are you will find that you repeat a dozen
or so phrases over and over again that reinforce
that negative image. If you know about them, you
can change them. Outer beauty and inner joy go hand
in hand.

Here are a few quick tips for increasing joy,
hope and optimism that will work no matter what
your age:

Make a list of at least 50 great things that
happen to you every day.

Laugh a lot. You¡¯ll heal your body and your
mind.

Discover a new challenge each month.

Try meditating for just five minutes each day.

7: Sex After 50 ¨C Ha! How many of you jumped
ahead to this section?

The importance of physical intimacy actually
depends on the couple. An alarming number of
men used to give up on sex after 60 and many
women used to feel that their sex life ended
with menopause. Thankfully, that is no longer
the case.

Sex at middle age can actually become better
and more satisfying than ever before. Maturity
gives a couple more experience in lovemaking.

The children are usually grown and left home.
The pressures of building a career and day to
day life are usually less stressful than in
younger years.

Is beauty really skin deep?

The answer is yes and no. It¡¯s a paradox,
isn¡¯t it? True beauty begins from the inside
out. Don¡¯t you wish there was some way to
¡°wriggle your nose¡± and regain that soft skin
you had as a child? Well, until someone comes
up with the true ¡°Fountain of Youth¡± we are
stuck with what we have.

Just remember that getting older doesn't have
to mean getting old.

How to Remove Dye From Hair

By Jenny Drake

How to remove dye from hair which is designed to ... well, dye,
change the color of, alter stuff. And it does it - very well.

Trouble comes when it gets on places you don't want it - like
your face, or clothes, or carpet.

Or you decide that the color 'to die for' just did.

There are some commercial products to remove dye from hair, and a
few home potions and processes.

Color Fix by Jheri Redding is designed to remove unwanted permant
hair color, and controlled usage allows color correction to
specific areas, either full or slight color corrections.

Loreal Color Zap gently washes away all permanent haircolor.
Ideal for color correction, removal of dark shades, muddy, uneven
results or color build up. Leaves hair ready for immediate
re-coloring. Loreal Effasol Color Remover washes away permanent
haircolor, leaving hair ready for recoloring. Can be used with
water or developer.

Jerome Rusell's Punky Color Punk Off is an easy to use gel that
will cleanse your skin from hair dye stains.

Roux Clean Touch is a gentle formula that removes haircolor from
skin and scalp. Removes excess color from hair ends and assists
in removing stains from clothing.

Home remedies include this one:

Hot Oil treatments, hairspray, shampooing and exposure to water
will gradually fade hair dye.

To remove the last bit of residue or stain on the hair (or to get
color out immediately) make up a small batch of bleach mixture
and add it to 2 tablespoons or so of shampoo in a cup. Stir it
up.

Shampoo your hair with this mixture, "kneading" the hair. Start
at the roots and work your way down to the end, and then back up.

You should see the color disappear right before your eyes.

Black hair dye is a special case.

It's very hard to remove black hair dye from your hair
completely, especially if it's permanent. Better to let it grow
out and not bleach it. Bleaching with chemicals damages the hair
it may make it so stretchy and thin that it comes out in your
comb.

Likewise if black hair dye stains skin or fabric. The best way is
to prevent it from staining in the first place by applying
Vaseline around the hairline before dyeing.

If black hair dye stains fabric then using detergent and water
quickly is a good idea - otherwise dry cleaning may be required.

Black hair dye stains can also be removed by rubbing cigarette
ash over the stained skin, dipping milk in cotton balls and
rubbing over the stained area, rubbing on WD-40 or even nail
polish remover or hair spray.

10 Great Hair Care Tips

Darla Di Grandi-Aguilera

If you watch the tabloids, you know that even the stars have
bad hair days. It just seems that when the professional
stylists are out of the picture, it is inherently human to have
a less than glamorous mane. But you can do your part to stay
ahead of the battle by following these great tips for hair
care.

1. Use a professional conditioner that is formulated for your
specific hair type. While you can skimp a little on the
shampoo, a good, professional conditioner is a must have. Look
for products in salons that are customized for your hair type.

For instance: If you have color or a perm, choose a conditioner
that is for chemically processed hair. And stay away from those
all-in-one shampoo and conditioner combos.

2. Choose a cut tailored to your face and body shape. The
number one mistake that people make when choosing a new
hairstyle is to pick a style based on popularity rather than
how it will enhance their features.

Always choose a new cut based on how it will enhance or detract
from your facial features and build. If you have broad shoulders,
choose a full-bodied cut over a close cropped head hugging doo.

3. Dont forget your UV protectants. Just as your skin gets
damaged by wind and sun, so does your hair. To combat this,
look for finishing products such as mousses, gels and sprays
that block UV rays.

4. Keep your appointments. Did you know that your hair will
split faster than it will grow? You need to get a trim every 6
to 8 weeks, even if its just a micro trim. A good hairdresser
makes them good because they know what to leave on the head,
not take off.

5. Leave chemicals to the professionals. There is a reason why
beauticians need to go to school to learn how to handle
chemicals and hair processes. You can do irreparable damage
with these products even if the package says that its way
easy. And even if you dont make your hair fall out, you could
end up looking like a clown and paying a stylist big bucks to
fix your mess. (Note: Most stylists charge double the rate for
corrective color than they do for normal color processes)

6. Get color for interest and body. Every cut needs a little
bit of color to make it truly breathtaking. No matter whether
your taste is subtle or dramatic, you can add interest and
volume to your tresses with a color process. Highlights,
lowlights, all over color, gray coverage, you name it, its all
good for your look.

7. Do weekly conditioning treatments. Even if your hair is
extremely healthy, it is constantly on the attack from wind,
sun, cold and heat. During the summer months, your hair is
battered even more when it absorbs chlorine and other chemicals
from your pool.

8. Get an ionic ceramic flat iron. Instead of frying your hair
with a conventional metal plated flat iron. Straighten your
tresses, add shine and infuse moisture with one of the a
negative ionic flat irons. We personally use T3 irons for all
our work.

9. Choose your styling products wisely. Avoid products that
leave build-up on your hair. If you see white gunk, that means
that your product is not water-soluble and may be coating your
hair shaft. Build-up causes limpness, breakage and inability to
curl not to mention the white flakes.

10. Did you know that if you use a towel after your shower to
dry your hair you are causing split ends and adding static
electricity to your hair. Dont rub the towel back and forth
over your hair, scrunch the towel around your hair like your
would scrunch crackers in your soup.

While all of these tips wont make you look like youve hired a
personal hairdresser, they will help you look the very best that
you can each and every day. When it comes to hair care, remember
that you wear your hair everyday. Now isnt it worth the time,
effort and money that it takes to keep it looking spectacular?

The Foundations of Beauty

By: Fawn Bales

Most of us have heard the old saying, “Beauty is only skin deep.”

Well, it’s not really true. Beauty is the outer manifestation of good health, good genetics and good will. The state of our health is reflected in the quality of our skin and luster of our hair. Beautiful strong hair and clear smooth skin is the result of good nutrition. The state of our mind and intentions in reflected in our smile, in our eyes, and in the regard our loved ones have for us. A beautiful smile and sparkling eyes are the result of a good attitude. Good genetics? Well, that’s just the result of good luck.

Although it’s not skin deep, it is open to interpretation. After all, beauty IS in the eye of the beholder. Those we love deeply are always beautiful to us, no matter what they actually look like.

Whatever our genetics and luck, whatever our mindset, most women would like to look as healthy and beautiful as they possibly can. Whether want to look magazine-cover perfect; or whether as healthy and vibrant and as youthful as possible, the first step in constructing a new beauty regimen is finding out if you are providing the tools your body needs to repair and maintain itself and the health of your skin, hair and nails. The basic factors affecting the appearance of these are 1) nutrition, 2) hydration, 3) toxification, 4) hormonal profile, and 5) sleep.

Nutrition

Your body rebuilds and repairs cellular tissue on a daily basis, and needs adequate protein, fats, vitamins, minerals, enzymes and other micronutrients to perform this function. Your skin regenerates constantly, building new cells underneath and sloughing off old cells. Without adequate protein, your skin will not be able to construct strong healthy collagen structures. Without an adequate amount of the right kinds of fats, your hair and nail cells will be weak and easily broken, and your skin will become dry and lifeless.

Hydration

Adequate hydration is vital to the process. Your body requires enough water to move nutrients into, and wastes out of, cells. Water is the basis of the interstitial tissues that flow between your muscle and fat cells, carrying oxygen and hormones from one to the other. Dehydration can lead to slack skin and lifeless hair.

Toxification

Detoxification is also another fundamental. Your skin is responsible for eliminating approximately 10% of your body’s toxins and metabolic wastes. By ensuring that the other organs of elimination are clean and functioning well, you lighten the load on the skin, allowing it to use its precious energy on repair and re-growth. Certain toxins can have definite adverse effects on the hair. Heavy metal poisoning from mercury can cause hair to fall out and to break and can aggravate gums. Lead causes neural damage that can lead to faulty signaling between your brain and outlying extremities.

Hormonal Profile

Your body produces many different hormones that are used by the body to communicate with outlying organs and tissues and tell it how to react to changing conditions. Some of the hormones that directly affect your hair, skin and nails are estrogen, testosterone, progesterone, and growth hormone. For example, estrogen is important for keeping your skin youthful and resilient, but too much can cause aggravation of the gums and lead to gingivitis.

Testosterone is needed to for the important task of producing your body’s own moisturizer, sebum; too much can lead to hair loss from your head and the unsightly growth of excess dark hairs on your face and belly. A lack of progesterone can lead to the skin condition cellulite. The hormones leptin, insulin, and glucagon are important for the maintenance of a healthy weight. As you can see, hormonal balance has a definite and important influence on how you look.

Sleep

Your body requires a certain amount of rest to rebuild, repair and replace cellular tissue. Interestingly enough, the skin is usually regenerated between the hours of 11PM and 2AM, so for best results, you should be sleeping during those hours. Your body also uses the time during sleep to balance brain chemistry. Adequate sleep and rest is one of the most important things you can do to improve the appearance of your skin and the health of your hair and nails, as well as giving you the energy to live actively and the mood enhancement to enjoy life.

Questions to Answer Before Choosing a Beauty Salon

By: Peter Calker

Beauty Salons in Vegas
http://www.beautysalonsinvegas.com

This article answers many of the most frequently asked questions about beauty salons and hair stylists.

Consider yourself in the following situation:

I will never forget how humiliated I was when I walked out of a beauty salon with my embarrassed husband in tow, slinking all the way through a mall just to get to our car and hide. I couldnt get out there fast enough! I immediately went home and washed my hair out and did it again. Color, cut and styling was a complete disaster! It was my first visit to a new beauty salon. I thought I had asked the right questions such as, --Is there a stylist there with experience working with natural curly hair?-- Of course the answer was a Yes. I learned the person with experience was just out of school and this was her first job.

Have you gone through a similar experience?

As a client, we expect to leave the beauty salon with a smile on our face, feel beautiful and be excited about our experience. The situation described above can be avoided if you just take some time to review the following tips before going to a beauty salon:

- If you admire someone elses hair, ask them the name of their beauty salon and stylist. If not, then

- Is the beauty salon easy to get to from home or work?

- Inquire if the stylists have experience with your type of hair. For example, is your hair long, curly or straight?

- You can find reviews on the Internet of beauty salons in your area by zip codes.

- How do you feel when you enter a beauty salon? Are you greeted right away? Is the salon clean and inviting?

- Are the staff dressed appropriately? Do they take care of their hair?

- You can provide pictures of hair styles you like to the stylist. There are also hairstyle magazines in all salons for you to check out.

- Do you enjoy being with your stylist?

- Does the stylist ask you what you would like and offer suggestions?

- Does the stylist discuss shampoos, conditioners or special treatments that would improve the health of your hair?

- Now you are all ready for --the look--. Does the stylist give you the information you will need on how to maintain that style once you leave the salon?

If you can answer most of the above questions to your satisfaction, then you have probably found a beauty salon and a hair stylist that will make you look fabulous. If not, get all of your information from the next beauty salon on your list. There is a talented hair stylist waiting just for you!

Benefits of All-Natural Indian Beauty Methods: Threading, Sugaring, Henna, Turmeric Treatment

By: ANU DODDAPANENI

India is a country known for its vibrant colors, rich culture, and timeless traditions.

What many don't know, is that India has been at the center of all-natural beauty techniques that have been used for 100's of years. Below is an account of 4 of these traditional beauty methods, and their benefits.

Threading is a centuries-old technique of hair removal practiced in India, and rapidly growing in popularity across the United States. Being that it is 100% natural, it is especially recommended for sensitive skin. The beautician removes individual or rows of unwanted hair by using string or “thread”, and pulling out the hairs by the follicle.

Threading is better than other methods of facial hair removal including waxing, tweezing, and razors. Waxing is not as precise; it burns, peels, and scars skin, and repeated waxing on the face (especially the eyebrow area) can cause premature wrinkles.

Tweezing and razors often times cut the skin and cause ingrown hairs. Unlike all 3 of the mentioned methods, threading is precise, gentle on the skin, and is actually excellent for removing ingrown hairs.

Sugaring is an all-natural method of removing unwanted hair, much like waxing. The key ingredients in sugar wax are lemon and sugar, each of which have their own benefitting properties. Lemon is known for its naturally astringent qualities, and is an excellent cleansing agent.

Sugar is a natural exfoliant in beauty, ridding the skin of dead cells. Most clients say that sugaring hurts less than traditional waxing, and redness if any, fades quickly. There are absolutely no chemicals in sugar wax, and is therefore ideal for sensitive skin.

Henna, also a centuries-old tradition in India, is used to create intricate hand art designs. The paste of a ground plant, naturally in a reddish-brown dye, is used to create temporary “tattoos” which last between 1-3 weeks.

In India, henna has traditionally been used on women before special occassions, holidays, and weddings. In addition to using henna on the body (usually hands and feet), henna has also been used on the hair to color gray hairs to a reddish-brown, and to deeply condition non-gray hairs. It's an excellent alternate for pregnant women who would like to maintain their appearance, but cannot use the harsh chemicals found in mainstream hair coloring kits.

Turmeric is a yellow spice used in much of Indian cooking. It has also been used as a Ayurvedic beauty agent. Turmeric not only has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, but also corrects hyperpigmentation and softens the skin. For these reasons, many Indian brides use a turmeric treatment to prepare for their wedding day - it leaves skin even-toned, shiny, soft, and supple.

Hair Color Secrets – Which Color Is Right For You?

Hair color correction is a big money maker in salons nationwide. The reason: over-the-counter hair coloring products have given consumers the impression that hair color is easy and extremely affordable. One look at a professionally-colored model on a commercial or glossy magazine page, and many people clamor to the closest drug store to purchase a $5 box of color with the hopes of receiving a $50 salon look.

The results are often disastrous, and it can take hundreds of dollars to correct a hair color problem that could have been prevented with just a tiny bit of knowledge and planning.

The most common problem seen with hair coloring at home and in salons is choosing a hair color that is too light for the natural shade of hair. Realistically, color can only lighten hair beautifully by a few shades. If you go any lighter than a few shades, you need to choose a high-lift product such as bleach or a professional highlighting system. Failure to do this often results in hair color that is much too brassy or even orange.

Word to the wise: high-lift hair coloring should only be performed by professionals. The controlled chemicals used in the process, if used incorrectly, can result in irreparable damage and/or chemical burns on the scalp and skin.

Another hair color mistake that is seen quite often is choosing a color that is too dark. Extremely dark hair color can be the most challenging to correct because dark color can actually stain the cortex (inner layer) of the hair, making it almost impossible to lighten. Again, avoid choosing hair colors that are more than a few shades darker than your own to prevent a costly cortex stain.

When it comes to choosing the right shade of hair color to use, pick tones and shades that flatter your skin tone. Choose warm shade of hair color (reds and warm browns) if you look best in warm-colored clothing such as reds, pinks and oranges. Choose a cool shade (beige, pale blonde highlights and neutral colors) if you look best in blues and greens.

As you can see, just a little bid of planning and knowledge can save you from costly hair coloring disasters. And by making an informed decision before you purchase hair color, you will not only save money, you will also save your hair from needless damage.

Hair color is a chemical, and every time you chemically process your hair, you damage it to some extent. The damage can be minimal, as is usually the case with high-end professional hair coloring systems, or can be extreme. And each time you use hair color to correct a problem, you are damaging your hair even more.

Here are just a few tell-tale signs that your hair has been over processed with hair color and other chemicals.

" The hair is limp and dull, and no amount of styling can bring back its luster and bounce.

" The hair color has faded dramatically, and you are left with brassy and banded hair color. (Banded hair color is evident by the sudden change of hair color along the hair shaft. For example: the hair may be dark until about 2" from the scalp where it turns a brassy orange.)

" The hair is extremely dry and brittle. When it is wet, it is almost impossible to comb it without causing breakage.

You can avoid damage to your hair caused by hair coloring by taking the same precautions recommended for choosing the right hair color. Choosing the right hair color reduces the amount of color applications, therefore, reducing the chances of your hair becoming over processed.

Simple Methods of Creating Perfect Sedu Hairstyle

By: MARY ANNE LIONEL

Simple Methods of Creating Perfect Sedu Hairstyle

Hair is one of the most important things about you.

It is the first thing other people pay attention to. Even your image depends on your hairstyle and healthy look of your hair. Your hair is also the first to response to any health problems.

That’s why you should reply to the hair problems at hand as quickly as possible. When you lack time for yourself, it is clearly obvious. However, if you treat your hair with care, it pays you back constantly by attracting attention.

So, if you want to impress, attract, or sedu someone, first thing you should do is to ensure that your hair is in the best condition possible. Sedu hairstyle depends on such things as clean and healthy hair, proper hair color, neat and suitable hairstyle.

Some of us usually miss one or even two of these stages; hence the result leaves much to be desired. But the good news is that you can fix any mistake and solve any problem as long as you have decided to do it.

Here are some smart tips that you can easily apply to make your hair seductive. I personally selected them among the top pieces of advice as the best suitable for self application.

Tip #1 Keep you hair clean

Cleanness of hair is vital for the sedu image because wearing neat and accurate hair you show your style and chic. Have you ever seen a stylish person with filthy hair? Of course, no. Since chic is a sign of personal care and a symbol of self-respect. So, to achieve a stylish and smart image, stick to the following points.

• First thing is to decide on the type of your hair. It means to get to know whether you have dry, normal, greasy, or mixed, namely dry tips and greasy roots, type of hair.

• Next thing is to choose the most suitable shampoo for your hair, and to wash it with frequency, which suits you the best. I advice to wash dry hair once a week, to look after normal hair twice a week, and to pay a very close attention to the greasy hair, which needs cleaning every day.

• Don’t forget about the conditioner. It is vital to keep your hair smooth. Try to have conditioner and shampoo of the same brand. The point is that the products of the same brand are made of the similar ingredients; hence in combination they will suit your type of hair perfectly, as they won’t contradict one another, or play funny experiments on your hair.

Now, that we have clean hair, we may think about the hair health.

Tip #2 Remember that the health is the key to success

If your hair is damaged by some misfortune or is simply in a poor condition of health, you need to pay more attention to its care. Remember that healthy hair can be very easily styled, and it never fails to be arranged in the way you want.

So, we proceed to the stage of health.

• First, you should remember to trim the hair tips every six weeks. There is no sedu image with the split ends. Moreover, split ends can’t be cured or revived. The only way to help your hair to be split-free is to cut those ends.

• Also if your hair is heavily damaged by coloring, blow-drying, or styling products, try to cut it short and regrow. New hair will grow healthy and smooth without any signs of previous damage.

• You can, of course, grow your hair artificially if you like, but mind that it is the same as styling products. Don’t overuse it. Moreover, artificial is always different from the natural, and the difference is not for good normally.

Tip #3 Reveal your secret passion and ability to seduce with new hair color

• Coloring is vitally important, when your sedu image lacks brightness. The result of the properly selected color is remarkable. You enlighten your face, show your inner flame and passion.

• Surely coloring with the chemical dyes may be harmful, but as long as you use special shampoos, conditioners, hair masks, and serums for the dyed hair the harm is minimal.

• There are masks and serums that create a film over every hair, thus protecting your fragile dyed hair from the outside damage, shampoos, and conditioners that revitalize the color and moisturize the roots and ends. Try to mix them, so that you have overall protection.

Only remember that producer should be one and the same for all the hair care products. If you choose to change your hair care products, you will need to change the whole set of products so that you do not harm your hair. So, choose carefully from the first time, because greedy men pay twice.

Tip #4 Correct drying and brushing lead to perfect styling

Drying and brushing are the preparatory steps to styling. After you wash and nourish your hair, you are ready to style it. So, be careful with drying and brushing in order not to spoil the general effect of your new Sedu hairstyle.

• First, don’t overuse blow dryer, it usually overdries your scalp and overheat your hair. When blowdrying use the coolest set possible, and try to air dry your hair at least once or twice a week.

• Don’t brush your hair, when it’s wet, because it causes serious damage. Use soft brushes made of natural materials for styling, and massage brushes to comb your hair before going to bed.

• I know some people believe that the less you brush your hair the better it is, but this approach is wrong. When you comb your hair, you straighten it, move natural grease from the roots to the ends, leaving your hair naturally moisturized. You also make sure that it is freeze free before applying styling products.

Tip #5 Finishing touch-ups for you Sedu hairstyle

Now that you have your hair clean, nourished, and dry, we can move on to the last stage in the process of creating Sedu hairstyle. It includes such points as straight hair and new haircut.

• Overall, blow or air drying and brushing are the finishing steps of styling hair image for most people. But if you want to have Sedu hairstyle you need to do several touch-ups.

• First, Sedu hairstyle is straight hair style. So, you can have straight hair harnessing such methods: natural straightness, chemical straightness, and heat straightness.

• The best option apart from natural straightness, of course, is the heat straightening. Today there are new technologies that will eliminate heat damage and improve the general condition of your hair leaving it straight, smooth, and healthy. Among these technologies is ceramic tourmaline technology, which moisturizes and ionizes your hair. For people who struggle with curls and waves, it is just the best option possible.

• Chemical straightening can be applied, but it is highly dangerous, not to mention the poor results when the hairdresser is unskilled, or the product is chosen badly.

• At the end, I would like to stress the importance of the suitable hairstyle. Sedu image doesn’t couple with mundane and casual hairstyle. Sedu hairstyle is tempting, ardent, and always seductive. There are actually several points in choosing hairstyle: face shape, individual preferences, and favorite celebrity image.

• Your face shape can be round, square, oval, rectangular, or heart-like. So, when you’re choosing a haircut, mind that not all of them will suit your face shape.

• By individual preferences I mean couple of hairstyles you prefer, or hair length you would like to have. When speaking to your hairdresser about your preferences, you should also take into consideration your face shape for the best result.

• And the last point is favorite celebrity image. The procedure is the following: you choose several pictures of your favorite celebrity, and go to your hairdresser. Then together you choose the most suitable hairstyle that will be both your favorite celebrity sedu image and your own sedu image.

So, I believe that now you will be able to create your own Sedu hairstyle that will reveal your inner self, and discover passionate and tempting features of your own character. Remember that Sedu hairstyle is not only external look, but something you live with. Believe that you are Sedu, and be Sedu.

Aging - Stop With Anti-Oxidants

By: CD MOHATTA

None of us wants to age.
Even if that is inevitable, we all want to look young. That is also right because youth has a beauty that is absent in age. How anti oxidants can help you in fighting aged looks? Let us find out.

Anti-oxidants: what are they- our body is constantly attacked by pollution, sunrays and other damaging factors. While saving the body, we produce free radicals. They are oxygen molecules without an electron. These free radicals’ search around the body for a free electron. They take it from a healthy cell and kill it.

That is very damaging to body and accelerates aging. Anti oxidants give an electron to these free radicals and stop them from damaging healthy cells. That is how they protect us from aging.

Anti Oxidants: how to use them. Most of the Vitamins such as Vitamin C, Vitamin E are anti oxidants. You get them from food. Beta-carotene that is a type of Vitamin a is an excellent anti oxidant. You get it from foods such as carrots.

You can also take supplements of these Vitamins under a doctor's advice. Some Vitamins are dangerous in higher dose. Selenium is another anti oxidant. Copper peptide is one more. Some of these anti oxidants are formulated in topical applications and can be used to maintain the young look of the skin.

Many Vitamin formulations are available in the market to fight aging looks by application. Choose one carefully that suits your skin type. Speak to your doctor and fight the aging looks. Anti oxidants are our friends.

Acne And oily Skin

By: CD MOHATTA

Acne is a real cosmetic problem.
Many of the acne patients sometimes feel that they would never get rid of acne. With latest treatments, if you have patience, you can treat your acne successfully. But what if you also have oily skin?

Oily Skin- What is it?

Our skin has sebaceous glands. These glands produce sebum. This sebum keeps our skin well moisturized and protects skin from microbial infections. The sebum is mainly made of lipids and dead skin cells. The skin constantly produces the sebum. If you don't wash your hair for few days you will find that your hair is oily. That is sebum. What if your body produces more than required sebum? You get oily skin.

Oily Skin- Why some people get it?

Why some people have it? As we saw, the sebum makes the skin oily. Some of us have overactive sebaceous glands. That is mainly because of hormones that trigger excess sebum production. That is the reason many women get more oily skin during their menstrual periods. Apart from regular care of the oily skin, talk to your doctor about any method to control the androgens that trigger sebum production.

Acne and oily skin-

Oily skin is the right environment for the P.acnes bacteria to flourish. With more oil in the glands and on the skin, these bacteria infect many glands and produce acne. If you have oily skin, please manage it properly, otherwise your chances of getting acne are high.

Mineral Makeup (info you should know)

By: CHRISTINA HARRIS

Mineral makeup is made from all natural minerals that come from the earth.

Most of them are a combination of serecite, mica, titanium dioxide, and zinc oxide. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are natural sun blocking agents and are used in almost every bulk store bought sun block or lotion you can buy.

Most minerals are also water proof so the hold of mineral makeup is usually all day with little or no touch up needed. The minerals used in the makeup are very finely milled into a powder that is micro-fine and will blend well into the skin and look very natural.

An outstanding range of colors in the minerals make it possible for mineral makeup manufacturers to offer a vast array of colors. A virtual rainbow has been made from blush, eye shadows, lipsticks, and foundation in hundreds of shades.

It's easy to buy two or three different foundation shades and blend them for a custom color of your own because minerals blend very easily together. Because our cosmetic grade minerals are so finely milled they won't clog your pores, and if some of them do happen to get into the blood stream, don’t worry, after all they're all natural and they are completely safe for the body.

Many doctors and dermatologists have proclaimed mineral makeup as the skin care makeup because it is so healthy for the skin and does not aggravate acne and it covers blemishes, acne, large pores, and scars very effectively.

If you're interested in a safe and natural alternative to chemical, oil and preservative laden makeup, minerals may be something for you to look in to.

You can find more information on Mineral Makeup at http://www.cmhessentials.com. Get the facts, ingredients, benefits as well as the makeup.

Losing Weight While Keeping Your Skin Firm

By: Johnnie D Jackow Sr

Considering you don't have an excessive amount of loose skin already it is possible to lose weight and keep your skin firm in the process. The idea is to keep your body well hydrated day in and day out. NEVER EVER let yourself become dehydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day and NEVER EVER totally eliminate your carbohydrate intake. From my experience most people who have lost weight too fast by eliminating their carbohydrates ended up with a lot of excess skin afterwards. The whole idea is to lose the weight to get healthier and of course to look better with your clothes ON and with your clothes OFF. Here are some tips

1. Follow a well rounded balanced diet such as my insulin response diet located at http://www.tbfinc.com

2. Follow a full body exercise routine alternating with a split routine every 4 weeks. For example, full body routine 4 weeks, split routine 4 weeks, full body routine 4 weeks, and so on.

3. Considering you don't have stomach ulcers and you are not on blood thinners you should also take ONE TEASPOON of cold artic cod liver oil ONCE PER DAY with your evening meal.

4. Take 1000-1500mg of lecithin per day. Lecithin has been known to increase the elasticity of the skin.

5. Anything you can do to increase circulation will also help. Skin brushing techniques are very good. Do a search on the internet for skin brushing to get all the info you need. Deep massages are also good.

6. Most importantly if you are more than 75 pounds overweight DO NOT try to lose weight too fast. The more you weigh the easier it will be to lose weight on this program so ease into it slowly so you only lose about 3 pounds per week. Doing this will prevent the sagging skin. If you lose weight too fast you will end up with loose skin 90% of the time.

7. Some of my clients have done weekly body wraps with great success but it can get messy. You can do this as an option but it's really not necessary.

As an option you can also take a supplement called collagen.

As I stated above one key to increasing the elasticity of your skin is to keep your body well hydrated. Yes, drinking water will do this. The average person needs at least ½ an ounce of water per pound of body weight. Possibly more depending on the type of exercise you do on a daily basis. The reason why so many people end up with loose skin after losing weight is because they go on low carbohydrate diets that will in turn dehydrate the body. If you lose weight and are dehydrated in the process you will see the scale weight go down but unfortunately most of the weight being lost is nothing more than water weight. If you are losing 2-3 pounds per week you are doing great. If you are losing 4-6 pounds you are pushing the limit. Any more than 6 pounds per week and you are sure to end up with loose skin after losing the weight because chances are you are restricting too many carbohydrates from your diet. Cutting out refined flours/breads and sugars will yield the best results.

Also, instead of getting on the scale every week to measure your progress go more by how your clothes are fitting. I always tell my clients to try on the tightest pair of pants they have and then follow my program for 4 weeks and then try them on again. After 4 weeks those tight fitting pants will be a thing of the past.

Follow all the above and you will see satisfactory results.

Beauty and the Self-Representation of Latinas in the TwentiethCentury

by Margot Stone Miller

For most people, the first impression they receive of someone isthat person’s physical appearance. Such integral parts of oursociety today, there are many factors that contribute torepresentation and self-representation. Throughout history, oneaspect of appearance that society holds in high regard is beauty. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, beauty and other formsof self-representation were racialized and valued hierarchicallyby those with power. As members of a minority group, Latinas weresubjected to the representations that “others” with power choseto employ with reference to them. In this paper I will look athow these images were reinforced in the media. I will also lookat the changes that transpired in mass media over time to allowLatinas to have more control over their own image.

Beginning with early images of Latinas in film, I will touch onthe types of roles that three specific Latina actresses playedmost commonly. These examples of beauty and image in film showthat there was a typology of Latinas on the silver screen.Historians often study Latinas in various industries, especiallythe garment and canning industry; I will look at the rise of thebeauty industry within the Latina community. Through involvementin the beauty industry, Latinas gained more control over theirimage as it was presented to the masses. As Latinas increasedtheir visibility in the beauty industry, they began to customizesales and services to their own ethnic needs. Ultimately, throughthe magazine Latina, women used the media in a positive way topromote their own Latina self-representation.

Trapped by the perceptions of early Anglo settlers from the East,Mexicanas faced the stereotypes that predominated innineteenth-century America. Because of the disproportionatemale-to-female ratio in the West, relationships between Anglo menand Latina women (in what is now the Southwest) were very common.
Swept away by their deviation from the “norm,” Anglo settlersviewed these women of the West as striking and exotic. Accordingto one early settler, “[There was] something inviting andseductive about them.

They were attractive, handsomely framed, and had beautiful eyes.”1 Upon initial contact with Anglos in the mid-nineteenth century, Latinas were placed in gendered roles that capitalized on such superficial first impressions. Those at the top of the hierarchy, in this case the Anglo settlers, racially categorized this group of females as seductive, establishing a stereotype that later the film industry would employ when casting Latinas in film.

In the middle of the twentieth century, there were several mediastars representing the Latina community, including CarmenMiranda, an entertainer from Brazil; Delores Del Río, a Mexicanactress; and finally Lupe Vélez, another actress, who, among herother roles, starred in what is often called the “MexicanSpitfire” series.

These are three of the most popular examples of actresses who were bound by gendered roles of sexuality or lightheartedness. Each of these three women played different roles in their films, but were ultimately typecast into a certain type of character that they could not escape. In film as elsewhere, Latinas werebound by ideas of beauty and sensuality.

The film industry chose to use these actresses solely for theirsuperficial female form. The characters these women played oftenlacked more than one dimension, and their roles in films servedmainly aesthetic purposes.

According to film historian Carlos E. Cortés, Carmen Miranda, for example, was “prohibited from more than scratching the surface of her characters”; “she became a prisoner of screen superficiality.

”2 Actress Delores Del Río left Hollywood, in part due to her dissatisfaction over being stereotyped into specific roles that capitalized only on her sensuality. Cortés argues of these actresses, “They were Latinas. Their strengths, if they had any, were decidedly female. They had reached the limit of the era’s Latina film image.

”3 These are three examples of women who surrendered to media ideas of how the masses should see them.
With these images of sexy young Latina actresses on the bigscreen, Latinas saw their own image presented through the eyes ofa social hierarchy. Overwhelmed by images of the “sexy Latina,”women had a hard time developing their own standards for beauty.

In trying to meet the hierarchical standards of beauty, manywomen turned to cosmetics. Many women noted, in a surveyconducted by Aída Hurtado, that they were “highly dependent on[artificial accoutrements] like cosmetics” in order to reach thesubjective standard of beauty reinforced in the mass media. Forexample, a young Latina, Cynthia Duarte stated, “My beauty for medepends on make-up…I really need those things to feel beautiful.

Without those things, I would walk with my head down. So that’swhy I think whether I’m beautiful or not is a hard question forme to answer.”

Hurtado also found in her research that many young Latinas used“white standards” of beauty as the benchmark in the ir perceptionof themselves, judging and gauging themselves against thestandards of society. Hurtado states, “They explicitly pointed toimages of white women as influencing their assessments of howmuch they should weigh and believed that that standard wasapplied to all women regardless of race and ethnicity.”5 By doingthis women judged themselves against generic standards that arenot customized to individual ethnic needs.

Over time, the relationship between women and beauty evolvedenough for women to take an active role in creating beauty. Theappearance of beauty parlors among the Latina population, forexample, offered Latinas the opportunity to participate in theformation of the physical appearance and image of Latinasportrayed to others. Some women also preferred the occupation ofa beautician to the physically taxing work in factories orfields. One woman related, “I always wanted to be a beautyoperator. I loved make-up; I loved to dress up and fix up.

I used to set my sister’s hair. So I had that in the back of my mind for a long time, and my mom pushed the fact she wanted me to have a profession—seeing that I wasn’t thinking of getting married.”6 This Latina strives to be a participant in the beauty industry, valuing image and wanting to help in the process of creating a service with an understanding specific to the beauty needs of Mexicanas.

While the presence of Latinas in the beauty industry increasedsignificantly in the twentieth century , not all Latinas feltsupported in the workplace. In Oregon, Wisconsin, Dana Torresattained her dream of receiving the training to become anesthetician. While practicing at a salon in Wisconsin, sheexperienced what she saw as discrimination.

Torres described making sincere efforts to relate to co-workers, even going as far as to school a co-worker on esthetics. Torres states, “I was hoping that by doing this, the people I worked with would no longer be indifferent to me. (By this time I was treated very indifferently for my views professionally and personally. I was very isolated. Ignored unless someone wanted a treatment).

”7 Ultimately Torres left this salon to pursue a position thatallowed her more experience in her field of specialty, esthetics.

Another example of a Latina who has participated in the beautyindustry is Silvia Tamayo, a Mexicana featured in the November2002 issue of Latina, who made her fortune selling make-up forAvon. Avon executives gave her a Woman of Enterprise Award; shehad recruited nearly 900 women to sell Avon products.

Tamayo serves as an inspiration to many Latinas because of her drive and motivation. She also is taking an active role in the beauty industry, participating in cosmetics, an industry synonymous with the enhancement of physical appearance. Because Tamayo is incontrol of the image she present s to her customers, she servesas a model of how Latinas have increased the ir control in thepresentation of the Latina image through the beauty industry.

The most important progression in Latina control overself-representation in the mass media is evident in thepublication of Latina. This magazine is the leading example todayof the progress Latina women have made in reclaiming power andcontrol over the image that is portrayed in the media. Throughthe publication of this magazine, issues that matter to Latinasare addressed.

As one can see through a select sample of article titles from this magazine, a positive image of Latinas is portrayed, encouraging women to take control of their own image and no longer succumb to an image imposed on them by hierarchical standards: “Curves and curls: Classic Latina Beauty and Style Just for You” (November 2003), “Hot Fiesta Fashions for Every Figura” (December 2002), and “Work it Chica! Smart Styles for elTrabajo (and your figura)” (August 2002). These articles useethnic standards of beauty and address Latinas’ own concerns. This magazine, as an example of mass media, does not hinder orlimit the image of Latinas. Instead the magazine customizesarticles about beauty and fashion, and prints advertisements tomeet the needs of Latinas today. Paying attention tocharacteristics of image specific to Latinas (as seen in thearticle about Latina curves and curls), Latina represents ethnicminority women’s response to racialization.

Through Latina magazine, Latinas better control the imagepresented by the media to the masses. With increased visibilityin the beauty industry , this magazine offers attentioncustomized to the ethnic needs of Latinas and thus contributes toan enhancement of self-representation among Latinas in the media.
Moving away from images common in early twentieth-century films, which capitalized on the sensuality of Latinas, the rise of thebeauty industry among Latinas helps to explode Hollywood’stypology of the Latina image.

By examining how images of Latinas were reinforced in the massmedia and the changes that transpired over time, one is able tosee the evolution of the image of the Latina. The racializationpromoted by a hierarchical racial order gave Latinas littlecontrol over their own self-representation. Beauty, an importantaspect of physical appearance in American society, is one factorof self-representation. Through Latina involvement in the beautyindustry, Latinas have reclaimed control of their ownself-representation.

Tour of beauty: a hundred years in the arms race to acquirenewer, better weapons of cosmetic enhancement

by Christina Larson

Since its debut last year, the cosmetic-surgery show "ExtremeMakeover" has drawn runaway ratings, its many viewers at oncefascinated and appalled by the needles, incisions, and bandagesthe mostly female participants will endure in order to climb afew notches on the beauty totem pole.

This fall, ABC moved its Nielson heavyweight into televisions' kingpin slot, Thursday evenings, while wincing critics sounded an alarm that Americans' fundamental understanding of nature, beauty, and artifice has changed.

Nonsense, darling. In the pursuit of beauty, American women havevariously plumped breasts with toilet-plunger-like suctiondevices (1890s), strapped themselves into fat-roller machines topress away the pounds (1910s), endured "electrode" shocktreatment to zap away wrinkles (1920s), worn wire headsets topull back cheek waddles (1960s), popped "youth" pills, andslathered on anti-cellulite lotions for generations.

Today's ladies have no greater drive to become beautiful, and defy the effects of timer than their mothers did. But the technology hassure come a long way.

In Inventing Beauty: A History of the Innovations That Have MadeUs Beautiful, New York Times patent writer Teresa Riordan givesreaders a delightful, quirky account of American cosmeticinnovations, from lipstick to silicon implants, from the mid-19thcentury to the mid-20th. She avoids swerving into pro-feminist orantifeminist polemics, and instead simply accepts that the desireto be fairest-of-them-all is an impulse as mythic and enduring asa fairytale. With a little Cinderella-magic of her own, Riordantransforms patent history into an almost titillating subject, while reminding readers that tanning creams, breast implants, andnail polishes are "not merely articles of fashion but legitimateinventions"--and serious business.

Beauty care is way to a woman's heart - includes related articleson beauty departments, make-up, lip cosmetics, eye make-up, nailcosmetics chains

by Elizabeth Parks

The American female is a very desirable customer. As the personusually in charge of most household purchases, this is theconsumer that most mass market stores target as their primarycustomer.

For four years now, Drug Store News has sponsored a nationalsample of bauty care use and shopping patterns among Americanwomen. The study is conducted for us by the Princeton, N.J.-basedGallup Organization.

This year's survey, which is based on a national projectablesample of 500 women, confirms that beauty care categories reallyare a popular way to a woman's heart.

Merchandised and advertised strategically, beauty care categorieslike fragrances, lipsticks and mascaras can lure a woman into astore, and once there, of course, she can be tempted intobrowsing and buying other types of merchandise.

This year Gallup found that, based on their incidence and frequency of use, there are three color cosmetics categories that especially deserve to be highlighted, via merchandising andadvertising, in the cosmetics departments of all chain drugstores. These are face, lip and eye color cosmetics.

According to Gullup, eight our of every 10 American women over 18 use face color cosmetics (80 percent) and lip color (80 percent), while seven out of every 10 (69 percent) use some type of eyecolor product.

In comparison, nail color is currently only used by half theadult female population (51 percent), while nail treatmentproducts are only used by a quarter of the population (25percent), according to Gallup.

Not only do the face, lip and eye cosmetics segments have thehighest population of users, they are also the segments with thehighest incidence of use, Gallup discovered.

Eight of all 10 users apply either a face, lip or eye makeup atleast once a day.

However, only one-third (35 percent) of all nail color users saidthey use a color polish "all the time," while 58 percent saidthey use polish "all or most of the time."

Possibly because very few women are ever entirely satisfied withthe skin tones they inherit, 65 percent of all women use either aliquid base foundation, and/or a face powder with a blush.

Rashida was really open to change, so we put her in the masterfulhands of celeb stylist Derrick Scurry. He lightened her naturallycurly hair, then added two-strand twist extensions. Extensionsreduce the frizz factor, which helps the style last longer. Anti-ageing treatments to fuel beauty industry

NEW DELHI: 'Look fair' has all along been the mantra of the Rs2000 crore Indian beauty industry. But cosmetic majors are nowshifting to "look young," with anti-ageing creams and lotionsbecoming the fastest growing segment.

"After fairness creams, the largest growing and the biggestsegment is anti-ageing related products at around 20 per cent,"says Deepak Bhandari of Modi Revlon, who recently launched itsanti-ageing skin care range in India.

The desire to remain youthful is nothing new. But the recentdemand for anti-ageing treatments lies in the belief thatrejuvenation is possible.

"More and more people in the older age group want to lookattractive and youthful too. Therefore, there is a demand forage-specific products too and this includes anti-ageingtreatments.The present upsurge in demand may be due to the"wellness" concept, which is sweeping the world," says ShahnazHusain, beauty expert.

The beauty industry is working overtime to come up with newproducts in this category as most of these fall under the premiumsegment as opposed to fairness creams and moistureisers which areavailable in mass segments also.

While Revlon has come to India with its international range ofproducts endorsed by Hollywood celebrities, Indian companies areconcentrating more on age-old ayurveda driven products.

Most anti-ageing products concentrate on increasing theproduction of skin firming agent collagen to reduce lines andwrinkles. These creams also claim to minimise discoloration ofthe skin.

"Our products are patented," says Bhandari.

Even gold is being used in the anti-age formulations as it isconsidered a potent metal containing age-control properties."Gold helps to transport oxygen molecules directly into the skin, influencing cellular functions and providing a new energy level,"says Hussain.

Like the fairness creams which have been at receiving end fortheir alleged non-effectiveness on a long term basis, theanti-ageing creams are also likely to be forced through the sieveof scrutiny, only time will tell if they will pass.

Learn How to Shower To Keep Your Skin Healthy Fashion & Cosmetics

Everyday you wash, shave, shampoo, clip your nails, wash, and dry your hair. Personal grooming, for most people, is a series of well-entrenched habits. And in most cases it is over done. Would you be willing to change your routine if doing so made your skin look more attractive and created a better-looking you?

Most adults whom are over thirty commit one big mistake when it comes to washing: The do too much of it. They shower in the morning, another after the gym, maybe even one before bedtime.

If you spend twelve minutes in the shower, that's too long. Cut your time in the shower to five minutes for your skin's sake.

Too much washing results not just in cleanliness but in removingtoo much oil from your skin, and itchy and irritated skin, particularly in the winter months.

If you are using a shower without a water filter and with the steam build up, you are subjecting yourself and your skin toexcess chlorine.

Below are bathing tips that you can benefit from:
1. Avoid using a washcloth on delicate areas, especially themucous membranes. Do use a soft sponge to massage your skin. Use a glycerine soap and sponge and move in one direction toward your heart.

2. Use medium-warm water in the shower, the cooler the better, but not too cold.

3. If you have normal to dry skin, use Dove Unscented or Basisfor Sensitive Skin on your body and either a soap free cleanseror nothing at all on mucous membranes. Do use many of thecommercial bar soap, since they are harsh on the skin.

4. If you tend to have oily skin, then use good gylcerine soap. I use this type of soap and it removes just enough oil withoutdrying my skin.

5. Skip a shower as often as you can. This may not seem likeappealing advice but the more time you have in between showers the better. Skip a shower for a whole day once or twice a week, especially in the winter. Allow your skin to produce and maintain its natural oils. Or if this does not appeal to you, make yourshower extra short on some days.

6. Make sure you use shampoos that contain mostly natural ingredients. A lot of commercial products contain synthetic chemicals, petrochemicals, and various dyes and artificialcoloring. All of these un-natural chemicals are extremely badfor you health. Learn which chemicals to avoid.

So that you can improve the health of your skin, takes some timeto look over your shower habits, Decrease the time in your shower, use a water filter to remove toxins from the water, massage your skin, and use only natural products for your skinand hair.
